A new roof designed around the solar that came later

The problem

The owners knew they wanted solar and did not want it yet. On most roofs that means an installer arrives later and drills a few hundred penetrations through a perfectly good covering, and the roof warranty quietly stops meaning anything.

What we did

Standing seam at a 16-inch pan, laid out so the seams line up with the array's rail spacing. Solar rails clamp to the seam. Nothing penetrates the panel, the roofing warranty survives the array, and the panels can come off in thirty years without a mark on the metal.

The detail

We ran the conduit chase and the roof penetration for the inverter during the roofing, under our own flashing, with a capped stub left on the deck. The solar crew connected to something that was already watertight instead of making a new hole in a finished roof.
