Concrete & clay tile
On a tile roof the tile is the shade. The underlayment is the roof, and it is the reason a tile job is worth doing properly.
Tile outlives what it sits on. We see 1920s barrel tile in Ortega and Avondale that is perfectly sound on top of underlayment that gave out twenty years ago. So the work is usually a relay: lift and stack the tile, strip the deck, build a new waterproofing layer, then set the original tile back with the broken pieces replaced from salvage.
Where a house has the original clay, we go to reclaimed stock before we go to a new run. New clay next to eighty-year-old clay never matches, and on a street of historic roofs the mismatch is the first thing anyone sees.
Best for: Historic districts, Mediterranean and Spanish revival houses.
