Standing-seam metal
24-gauge painted steel or aluminium, machine-seamed on site, with no fastener anywhere in the water plane.
The difference between standing seam and an exposed-fastener panel is where the screws are. On an exposed panel every screw goes through the flat of the metal and every one of them relies on a neoprene washer that hardens in the sun. On standing seam, clips hold the panel from underneath and the seam is folded over them, so nothing penetrates the surface water runs across.
Near the ocean we specify aluminium rather than steel. Salt aerosol will find a cut edge on a painted steel panel within a few seasons, and a coastal roof spends its whole life in it.
Best for: Coastal exposure, simple roof geometry, and anyone planning solar.
