From the first site measure to the final coat of hardwax oil, we build the wooden heart of your home — closets, cabinetry and millwork shaped around the way you actually live, not the way a catalog assumes you do.

"We don't build furniture for houses. We build the parts of a home you touch every day — and those should be made of real wood, by real hands."

Our Story

Oak & Umber started in 2018 as a one-bench shop building closet systems for two Jacksonville builders. Word traveled the way it always does in this trade — through the people who open those drawers every morning.

Today a six-person crew runs the same way that first bench did: one material honored, one project at a time, from raw sawn lumber to the final hinge adjustment on install day.

Client Stories

Woodwork That Earns Its Keep

Our work speaks through the people who live with it — repeat clients, referrals, and homes we've returned to three rooms later.

"It finally feels like the house was always meant to have this kitchen. The grain runs the full length of the island — nothing was accidental."

How We Work

A Clear Path From Sketch to Sawdust

Every build follows a structured three-phase process — so you always know what's happening in the shop and what arrives next.

Week 01–02

i.Measure & Consultation

We walk the space together, laser-measure every wall, and learn how you actually use the rooms — what sticks, what overflows, what you reach for daily.

  • On-site Measure
  • Material Samples
  • Fixed Quote
Week 03–05

ii.Design & Materials

You approve shop drawings and 3D renderings, choose boards from our racks by hand, and sign off on stain and hardware before a single cut is made.

  • 3D Renderings
  • Board Selection
  • Finish Approval
Week 06–12

iii.Build & Install

Your project is cut, joined and finished in our Jacksonville shop, then installed by the same hands that built it — scribed to your walls, dead level, dust-free.

  • Shop-Built
  • White-Glove Install
  • Lifetime Tune-ups

Project Process
How long does a typical project take?
A single closet or media wall typically runs 6–8 weeks from measure to install. Full kitchens run 10–14 weeks, and whole-home packages are phased room by room over 3–6 months.
Do you work with builders and designers?
Constantly. About half our work arrives through general contractors and interior designers. We provide shop drawings, coordinate site schedules, and install around other trades.
How far do you travel?
Our standard service area covers Northeast Florida — Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, St. Augustine and Amelia Island. Larger whole-home projects can extend beyond; ask early.
Investment & Pricing
What does a typical project cost?
Every build is quoted from drawings, but as a guide: reach-in closets start around $4,500, walk-ins from $12,000, and full custom kitchens from $35,000 depending on timber, finish and hardware.
Is the design consultation free?
The first site visit and consultation are complimentary. Detailed shop drawings and 3D renderings are covered by a design fee that's credited in full when the build goes ahead.
What's included in the quote?
Everything to a finished, installed piece: materials, hardware, finishing, delivery, installation and a post-install tune-up visit. No allowances, no surprise change orders.
Materials & Craft
What woods do you work in?
Primarily white oak, fumed and cerused oak, black walnut and quarter-sawn ash — sourced from sustainable American mills. We hand-select every board that enters the shop.
Solid wood or veneer?
Both, honestly used. Doors, face frames and edges are solid; large panels use premium shop-sawn veneers over stable cores so they stay flat in Florida humidity.
How do finishes hold up?
We finish in hardwax oil or catalyzed lacquer depending on the room's use. Both are serviceable — scratches can be repaired locally instead of refinishing the whole piece.
