Quarter-sawn ash
Hardwax oil over a light seal

Elena Marsh owns about four hundred books and a room that had nowhere to put them. She also wanted a door that did not look like a door.

Load first, looks second

A wall of hardbacks is heavy enough that the failure people notice is sag rather than collapse. We held the clear span to 32 in. between verticals across the whole wall and thickened the two longest shelves to 1 in., with a hardwood edge glued on to stiffen them.

Ash earns its place here. It is stiff for its weight and it takes a clean edge. Quarter-sawn ash also moves about a third less across its width than plain-sawn does through a Florida year, which matters when a shelf has to stay flat and a stile has to stay straight for decades.

The door that is not a door

Elena wanted the passage to the back hall hidden. Concealed doors fail in one of two ways: the reveal gives them away, or the weight pulls them out of square within a year.

We built the door as a torsion box, so it is stiff and light rather than solid and heavy, then faced it in shelving that continues the pattern of the wall on either side. It swings on a pivot set into the floor and header, carrying its load down rather than hanging off hinges. The books on it are real. They sit in a rebated lip so they travel with the door instead of walking off the shelf every time it opens.

The reveal around it is 1/8 in., the same as the gap between every other shelf module on that wall, so the eye reads it as one more vertical line.

The ladder rail

We could not buy a rail in the profile the drawings wanted, so we milled it. Solid brass stock, turned and polished in the shop, running on brackets we made from the same bar.

It gets used. Elena reaches the top shelf about twice a week, and the rail has worn bright on the four feet nearest the desk.

Nothing glued that needs to move

The wall is 21 ft long and the room swings through a Florida year. A run that length, glued rigid across the grain, will crack somewhere. It always picks the most visible joint.

So the panels float in their frames rather than getting glued in, and the long horizontal rails are fixed at the center and slotted at the ends, which lets the wood expand toward the corners where nobody is looking. The joinery is doing two jobs at once: holding the thing together, and giving it somewhere to go.

Six days, one surprise

The 1911 plaster on the chimney breast turned out to be 3/4 in. proud of the drywall either side of it, which the survey had recorded and the drawings had accounted for. The surprise was the floor, which had been leveled at some point with a compound that had cracked under the window bay. Our lead installer stopped, called it, and we shimmed off the sound substrate rather than build on top of a floor that was still moving.

Everything reads level within 1/8 in. over 8 ft, which is the tolerance we hold to, and the shelves read level to the eye, which is the tolerance that gets you paid.

Every guest asks about the library wall. It swallowed four hundred books and somehow made the room feel bigger.
