Dense, strong and stiff for a softwood, with a pronounced grain and a high strength-to-weight ratio. It holds fasteners exceptionally well and takes preservative treatment better than most, which is why it dominates structural and treated applications.

Growing range
The southern pine belt runs from Virginia down through the Gulf states and west into Texas. It is the most heavily managed softwood resource in North America, which is what makes the supply deep and the market liquid.

Douglas Fir
In dimension and timbers where strength governs and the western freight does not pencil. Check the design values before swapping.

SPF
Where fastener holding and density matter more than weight. Heavier, stronger, and usually closer to the job.
Do not substitute
Fine appearance millwork
The grain and resin that make it strong make it wrong for paint-grade trim and delicate moulding. Eastern White Pine is the answer there.
