What a re-roof actually is
Layer one
A roof starts with the part nobody ever sees.
Under every covering is a timber frame and a sheathed deck, and the fastening that holds that deck down is what carries wind uplift into the structure. It is the layer that decides whether the rest of the roof stays where it was put.
Layer two
Water finds the seams, so the seams get built first.
Underlayment goes over the whole deck, and every place two planes meet or something passes through gets its own detail: valley metal, step flashing at a wall, a boot at every pipe. Old flashing left under a new covering is where a great many leaks begin.
Layer three
Then the roof you can see goes on, course by course.
Starter at the eave, courses run straight off a chalk line, and hip and ridge caps last. It is the only layer anyone looks at, and the last one to be touched.
